Am I the only one?

by Jerry
(San Diego)

I don't know of anyone else currently ingesting and investing in as many high-end supplements as myself.

I'm a 59 year old male. Believe it or not, I have truly been into supplements for 55 years, virtually nonstop. Starting with the very popular "Homocebrin" liquid multivitamin syrup in the mid 1950's. I used to sneak into the fridge and drink it right out of the bottle. It was so sweet and delicious, I couldn't help but megadose it, while too young to realize I was doing so, or what I had started.

Then in 1965, the lady who ran a pet store near our house introduced me to the line of Shaklee supplements that she sold on the side, and I started buying them with my grass cutting money. That included brewer's yeast, multi vitamins and minerals, etc.

In 1968 a very unusual new friend introduced me to megadosing vitamin C, and I got hooked on health and longevity supplementation strategies. He was older than me, and was a grad student at Washington University in St. Louis specializing in neuroendicrinology research.

He got me reading more books on vitamins, etc, including Adelle Davis. He was already studying supplements as sort of a hobby, and experimenting with all kinds of supplement products. I was kind of his guinea pig since I pretty much matched everything he was taking and experimenting with.

My father was also into health foods, and we visited our nearest heath food store regularly, trying all sorts of foods and products, including eating a lot of wheat bran and whole grains, etc.

By 1971 I became a strict vegetarian, and got into more and more supplements. I remained a vegetarian for 23 years.

Depending on my income, I got into herbs and superfoods in a big way during the various periods in my life that I could afford to do so.

Then I got deeply into the longevity movement, following Dirk Pearson and Sandy Shaw's path and formulation.

Over the past few years, I have been on a very complex, steadily evolving regimen, using quite expensive high end supplements and superfoods.

Just for my vitamin C, I take 4 different products, mostly food-based.

For the past 20 months I have also very successfully been taking Green Vibrance, with has over 60 top-end ingredients. Even though I have always had more than sufficient levels of nutrients, Green Vibrance had a very noticeable effect on my health and vitality. I've gotten 2 of my friends on it, and they both regularly report to me how much they love it and how healthy they've become.

My daily mix now includes 12 different herbal products, mostly from the top-end company, Gaia Herbs, which I believe has the highest quality line of herbs. I shop at Whole Foods mostly.

I'd love to compare notes with you or anyone else who are into serious supplemetation. I feel that I may be the only person with You can contact by email:

I really like your website!
It would be great to hear back from you.

Homocebrin - YUCK
by: Paul W.

When young - late 1940's - mid 50's (I'm 71 now), we four kids were given a daily morning dose of 1T. Homocebrin and 1T. cod liver oil with a glass of orange juice as a chaser. We all hated the disgusting crap but were forced to choke it down. It was, of course, completely unnecessary and useless as science has proven and we all caught whatever childhood disease was going around - chicken pox, mumps, measles, endless colds - we had them all. And the orange juice - my father would come home with a box of oranges and every morning we'd hear his "juicer" going rummm, rummm, rummm as he squeezed out the juice. The oranges were occasionally green, and it was an excellent lesson in teaching a child to hate his/her food; as a result I don't touch oranges to this day. Once, my sister was 11 years old and came to the breakfast table and said, "I can't do it anymore. I can't drink that stuff." I thought her bravery was breathtaking. My father dragged her into the living room and gave her a beating and she came back and chugged down her O.J., turned around and puked it all on their new gold carpet. She was dragged back into the living room and beaten again and then taken to school. Good way to teach kids to hate certain foods and their ignorant, violent parents. When we finished high school, we all left for the four corners of our country, never to return.

Loved the vitamin back in the 40's, just bought a bottle of generic B complex. The pills smell just like Homocebrin, so I had to see if it's still made, obviously not, too bad.

Where can you get it now. Im 52. I remember it well gave it to my eldest daughter she is 24 now. Could not find it after 1993. Very upsetting. It was good. We had clear skin and was very healthy. No childhood illnesses. Did they change the name or what. If anyone knows where to get it contact me @

I hated the Homocebrin...not so much the taste but the consistency....yuk. But I was an anemic little waif (not any more....) and also had to take this awful brown iron tonic right before the Homocebrin. I am 66 yrs old. What made me think of this anyhow??

Yes....I grew up in the 50's and you had a dose of Homocebrin everyday. I loved it. It was made in Indianapolis by Eli Lilly. Have not seen it in years. They need to start making it again.

And I thought I was the only one! I used to sneak into the frig when my mother wasn't looking and take a swig of my sister's homocebrin. I loved the taste and always wondered why mom didn't wonder why the bottle was used up so quickly!

better than cod liver oil
by: jerry the geek

I'm 68, I remember taking homocebrin. And I remember when Mom swapped it for cod liver oil. Yech! I never knew what I did to make her that mad.

Haven't seen it on the market for 30 years, so I guess it's not being made any more ... certainly I can't find a supplier via an internet search.

I also have been searching for Homocibrin. My mom also gave it to us in the 50's and boy did that stuff work! After we had a long illness and were still weak, she'd give us a dose and we were running around in no time. I'm fighting an illness and would like to hopefully get more get-up-and-go. Oh, and I also snuck drinking it, too. LOL

it was the best
by: Anonymous

Too funny. I was just talking about sneaking the homocybrin from the the refrigerator and drinking it from the bottle! I thought about it because my grandkids hate their vitamins and I wondered it the good stuff in the brown bottle was still being produced? I guess not--I would be tempted to tip the bottle again!

yes, I remember
by: Donald

Why I remembered homocebren tonight and thus did a web search I don't know. My parents moved from one south Georgia town to another in 1956 when I was age 5. In town number 2 I remember liking the taste of homocebrin and opening the refrigerator (ice box references still existed) and sipping it from the bottle. My mother was from an early north Florida drugstore family and perhaps that is where awareness of the product and thus our family's use originated. That, with many servings of fresh fruit and mother's insistance of eating broccoli very often, must have certainly counteracted the enjoyment of southern comfort foods.
Maybe soon an image of a bottle will be available.

I have often thought about how good Homocebrin tasted--and I'm 65. As I recall, my mom gave it to my baby brother who was born in 1955. She kept it in the refrigerator and I used to sneak it when I could! :o) I loved it!

I remember Homocebrin well, also. Used to get a soup spoonful of it every morning when I was a kid back in the 50's. Thick yellow liquid, brown bottle; my Mom used to keep it in the refrigerator. If I remember right, you had to shake it well. Don't recall if it did us any good or not, but it tasted good!

I remember Homocebrin
by: Carolyn

Post polio virus in 1948, I remember my paternal grandmother saying I wouldn't survive to 7.

That spoonful of Homocebrin was the answer.

But, who was the manufacturer and is it still avaiable. If not why not. my grandchildren need it now!!

Yay for homocebrin
by: June

My sisters and I were given homocebrin through the 1950's and we LOVED it.We lived in Brooklyn,N.Y. at the time. I'm glad that the drug company "shared the love" of the supplement throughout the USA !!

You're not alone!
by: Jim D

My brothers and I got a daily spoonful of what I believe was Homocebrin (a thick yellow liquid in a brown bottle). My mother brought it out when it started to snow; I guess she figured it would keep us from catching pneumonia or something. This was in the mid-to-late 1950s.

It did taste pretty good - sort of sweet and lemony. I've been unable to find out what the heck was in the stuff, but it obviously didn't hurt us any.

Not the only one
by: DrJon

Yes, I've heard about homecebrun and I also remember taking shaklee vitamins which my mom give me in the 60's and early 70's.I also have read books by Adelle Davis and feel we need to read them over again when we forget and start eating packaged foods.Maybe because of my early start, I have grown from a primary care doctor into a functional medicine physician. Your comments take me way back. Thanks for them.
