Erectile Dysfunction Herbs

L-arginine has been used for erectile dysfunction. Like the prescription drug sildenafil citrate, L-arginine enhances the action of nitric oxide, which relaxes muscles surrounding blood vessels supplying the penis. As a result, blood vessels in the penis dilate, increasing blood flow, which helps maintain an erection. The difference in how they work is that the prescription drug blocks an enzyme called PDE5 which destroys nitric oxide and L-arginine is used to make nitric oxide.

Icariin, a type of flavonoid, helps to improve sexual erectile dysfunction of the prostate commonly lost when the prostate becomes inflamed, irritated, or hyperplasic. It shares several reaction mechanisms with prescription drugs commonly used in western medicine to treat impotence. It acts as a PDE5 inhibitor, enhances the production of bioactive nitric oxide, and mimics the effects of testosterone. To achieve these effects, fairly high levels have to used. Refer to your internet for specifics.

As part of a recent general blood test, my levels of testosterone and estradiol were measured. Both hormone levels were satisfactory, but the ratio of estradiol to testosterone was higher than desired. There are prescription products to inhibit the effects of aromatase which converts testosterone into estradiol. Aromatase inhibitors work by reducing levels of unbalanced estrogen in the body. As might be expected these prescription drugs come with their own batch of side effects. A natural product with no side effects is chrysin.

Chrysin has additional benefits that aromatase inhibiting prescription drugs do not have. It a potent antioxidant that possesses vitamin-like activity in the body. It is also an effective anti-inflammatory through the inhibition of the Cox 2 pathway.

Chrysin has recently been found to block the suppression of natural killer (NK) cells that are seen during surgery. NK cells are part of the immune system. They go after cancer cells and destroy them. During surgery the production of NK cells is suppressed by the body because of the traumatic nature of the event. However, during cancer surgery is the time when NK cells are needed most, so they can go after and kill any cancer cells escaping into the bloodstream that may seed new cancer growths elsewhere in the body. Additionally, chrysin is a potent inhibitor of cancer resistance protein, keeping patients who have chosen traditional drug treatments from developing multi-drug resistance.

Chrysin also significantly increases overall sexual function, and increases sperm count.

Other herbs purported to increase sexual activity

There are other herbs which are sold to increase sexual activity. I do not question whether they increase sexual activity. There is definitely an effect, but I question whether the sexual effect is worth the side effects. Most of them are expensive and those I have tried cause a spacey feeling in my head which I do not find acceptable.
